Discuss Technology (U24: P2, M1)

Learning Outcome 1 (U24): Understand the products that are produced within and across media industries.

Media convergence refers to the merging of mass communication outlets, such as: Print, TV, Radio, Internet and other portable and interactive technologies through varies digital media platforms.

Pre-Production
Convergence is now an essential part of the pre-production process. New technology has made prevent long delays in the pre-production development. These new technologies include:

FaceTime
FaceTime is a relatively new technology that has been prominent over the past few years. FaceTime allows people to discuss the pre-production process (budgets, potential locations etc), without the struggle of needing to find a place and time everyone can do. FaceTime allows this situation to not get in the way of the pre-production system, resulting in a final product being finished quicker. Not only this, but now FaceTime allows multiple people to be present on one call. This allows the majority to meet, but someone who perhaps may be very important in the process, but is away on another business can still be involved in the process. FaceTime also saves people a significant amount on flights, as it stops people from having to travel for miles at a time. Convergence is used here as people are able to use the service across different platforms and gain instant access.

Monday.com
Monday.com allows a team to stay up to date with all the the tasks that are ahead of them. It allows all in the team to state the position they are in, whether that is completion or if they've hit a obstacle they're struggling to deal with, and do this anywhere at any time. This allows members of the team to know where each person is up too, what areas need improving or speeding up, and where they can move forward. Monday.com allows people to inform the team of their position, and be able to establish the areas of the project that needs the most amount of help/work. Monday.com makes weekly group meetings unneeded, as its all available for the whole group to see on a virtual platform, at anytime and in any location. Having everything digitally accessible allows people to add to it, from different technological devices, and it instantly updates for all to see. This prevents a large number of Gantt Charts from having to be created, as well as allowing the team to see where each member is at.

StoryBoard
Before introduction of storyboard website and apps, a specialised story-boarder would have to spend a large proportion of time hand drawing each scene into a separate storyboard. Thanks to websites such as storyboardthat.com, these peoples jobs have become a lot quicker and time efficient. Using an online storyboard maker enables the storyboard to be accessed by all members of the pre-production system, allowing the members of the team to know what they need for what scene. It also allows people to edit the storyboard and change the storyboard, without making it unclear with what they've done. Using a digital storyboard also allows the group to always have a copy, so if they need to make a quick change or quickly check if something is possible, they can. Creating the Storyboard as a digital version allows parts to be changed quickly and professionally. This prevents the need for numerous drafts, which would waste a significant amount of time. Instead each member can edit the storyboard from their different devices and for it too be seen by everyone.

Production
Convergence is also an essential part of the production process. New technology has prevented long delays in the production development. These new technologies include:

Digital Cameras
Digital Cameras replaced the old film cameras, bringing better quality pictures to our screens. Not only this. Specialised digital cameras allows you to send footage straight from the camera to the different departments that need the footage, allowing the production process to move swifter and at an increased efficiency. These technological advancements enables the final product to not only be finished at a higher standard, but also helps it be completed quicker. The fact digital camera footage can be sent and accessed on a number of different devices, allows the possible hold ups that could come with the previous, film cameras, to be extinguished. For instance a problem with the old cameras was that the film was all physically, so if it went missing or got damaged, you'd have to start again. Now with digital cameras, you can have multiple versions of the same footage, removing this situation from happening. With these new cameras, people are also able to download the footage for their own uses, allowing the producer to see how the film is coming along, without having to be present. An example of this camera is the Blackmagic Design URSA mini pro.

SD Card
The introduction of SD cards allowed editing to be completed at a much quicker rate. Before SD cards where introduced, each individual piece of film would be uploaded to a specific software, to start the editing process. SD cards allow the team to import all the footage straight into one platform, enabling the editing to be done smoother and in a more efficient manner. The development of SD cards enables the team to keep all footage in one place, meaning its easier to convert the footage to the specific platform. SD cards also allow the footage to be duplicated, making multiple copies of the same takes, for safety purposes, in case anything happens to the original footage. SD cards also helps members of the team, who are not present, view the footage. This is done through being able to upload the footage to the SD card, then downloading the footage to send over to the missing members via email.

USB
New ways to edit footage that has been captured has enabled the editing process to be sped up immensely, and these new platforms can only be used to the fullest with the help of a USB. USB's allow the team to save, what will be the final product. This means the team can take the project wherever they go, not stalling the production rate, meaning the product can stay up to date with the released date. USB's allow the project to be saved onto multiple platforms and other USB's, essentially working as copies of the product for the team, in case somethings happens to the first copy. With a USB, the product can be sent to people all over, whether its to gain feedback from the producer, or for the team leader to give his feedback to the team. USB's mean the production line can continue swiftly, with missing team members not affecting this. This is because each member can have an updated version of the project on a portable USB. Using a USB allows the team to quickly move footage from platform to platform, enabling all to easily access the footage.

Post-Production
Convergence is also an essential part of the post-production process. New technology has allowed the project to be branched out to a wider audience. These new technologies include:

Editing Video
Advancements in editing apps that are available, both on computers and BlackBox technologies has advanced the editing process enormously. Free video editing apps allows people to edit their footage wherever they are, whenever. These advancements prevent long term brakes, perhaps due to systems being down or specific members, who are needed to help with a specific editing task, not being present. New editing apps allow people to edit footage at their own comfort, fast-tracking the editing process and make it more efficient. The apps also enable multiple people to log onto one account, meaning that the team can keep all the footage on one account, and can see where everyone is up to. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with where each member is, see what needs being done urgently and who needs help with what segment. Apps such as FinalCut have been made compatible on smart phone devices, allowing team members to take the editing process with them wherever they go.

Editing Photos
Companies have started to release photo editor apps that are compatible for mobile devices, infiltrating a new market. These apps allow people to bring editing with them wherever they go. This enables the editing process to move along swiftly and efficiently. Editing apps on a phone prevent delays; if someone can't come in for whatever reason, this would previously hamper the editing process, but now absents won't effect the process, as they can still edit what needs to be edited from wherever they are. Apps such as Adobe Photoshop Express allows people to edit whenever they need to, being able to edit to a good standard whilst being away from all the technologies present at the office. Photo editing apps allow the team to continue the editing process, even when people are not present at a specific time.

Google Drive
Companies have started to place all their footage, unedited and edited, onto a private Google Drive. This is because it can be accessed by whoever has the private code, wherever and whenever. Google Drive allows people to access the information and footage to enable them to complete the product to its best standard. Google Drive prevents everyone needed an individual copy of a specific document, preventing a hold up of information, stalling the process. Google Drive can also be used as an open form, with companies putting information about up coming ventures onto this platform, for eager fans to view. Advertising and Marketing has changed and developed a tremendous amount throughout time. Companies can now advertise on new web 2.0 technologies such as Social Media, as well as utilising traditional methods, such as billboards. These have enabled companies to branch out to a wider range of audiences, as they can rely on people either sharing on social media, or spreading the message of the product verbally.

M1
The advertising industry has utilised new technological developments, such as social media, Video on Demand (VoD) services and hashtags, each giving companies more ways to advertise.

Social media has allowed companies to expand their following to a new branch of people, enabling the final product meet an audience that was not necessarily initially thought to be a target. Companies have been able to use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to interact more with their audience. These platforms also allow the product to be viewed by people who the company wouldn't have initially aimed at. This is through share and comment options on these platforms, branching out the product and in turn enabling the product to be viewed more and by more. Companies can use these platforms to place advertisements on, capitalising on the large number of users, resulting in not only the product, but the company gaining a following and branching out its audience. Companies wont just advertise the final product on social media, but also will announce previews and teasers of the final product on these platforms, creating hype and a following, before the actual release of the product.

Hashtags enables the company to build an awareness for themselves, by expanding their influence across different social media platforms, through getting hashtags that they created, relating to the product, to spread the awareness of the product. Hashtags can also be used to link the product directly to the companies social media accounts. Hashtags gives companies an interactive form of advertising with their audience, as it will allow the audience to pro-consume the information, as well as show widespread support, for the product and company, through using the hashtag. Hashtags allow audience to access the product, through hyperlinking the consumer to the company, straight to the companies page. Hashtags are cost efficient (FREE!) and can create large brand awareness for the company.

Video on Demand services (VoD) allow the consumer to access their favourite shows as many times as they want, whenever the want. Companies will utilise these services by putting their products on these services, allowing people to access them and binge watch them, bringing the creators awareness and a following. VoD ridicules the waiting process, allowing consumers to watch whole series at a time. This creates a more competitive market for companies, as people are watching more than ever before, meaning they ned to create ore then ever before. Companies can use these VoD to place subtle advertisement's during popular shows, as its a guarantee that they will be seen and that will bring a wave of customers to that company.

QR codes allows consumers to interact with the company that is advertising the product. The code gives the consumer a different opportunity to discover new and exclusive opportunities in the product, for example Call Of Duty added QR codes into their billboards, as a way of branching out their product. QR codes combines traditional and digital advertising, allowing audiences to go straight to the companies website, via their blackbox devices.
